Verse of the Day 3/30

Psalm 9:9-10 (ESV) The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

After having read Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy and seeing the movies, when I see or think of the word stronghold, the images of "Helm's Deep" from the movie come to mind.  It was a place to retreat from danger cut into the rock on the side of a mountain, a seemingly impenetrable fortress.

If you are familiar with the book or the movie you know that the evil forces greatly outnumbered King Theoden and Aragorn and laid seige to the fortress and penetrated the fortress by explosives and shear numbers.  Do you remember how it ends?

These verses refer to the Lord God as our stronghold, our fortress.  Unlike the walls of Helm's Deep this bulwark never fails.  Read or sing the lines to the ancient hymn, "A Mighty Fortress" written by Martin Luther in relation to Psalm 46.  Whatever battle you are facing today, may you put your trust in Him.

 A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he amid the flood
of mortal ills prevaling.
For still our ancient foe
doth seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

 Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right man on our side,
the man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth, his name,
from age to age the same,
and he must win the battle.

Blessings,
Mike

Psalm 9:7-12 (ESV)

But the Lord sits enthroned forever;
    he has established his throne for justice,
and he judges the world with righteousness;
    he judges the peoples with uprightness.

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
    a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you,
    for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

11 Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion!
    Tell among the peoples his deeds!
12 For he who avenges blood is mindful of them;
    he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
