Verse of the Day 8/12

Through the Bible - Psalms 4-6, Acts 9:22-43

Good morning,
For today's verse we'll go to Ephesians chapter 4 where Paul presents us with perhaps one of the greatest challenges in our Christian lives and walk, especially for this day and age.

Ephesians 4:29 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)  No rotten talk should come from your mouth, but only what is good for the building up of someone in need, in order to give grace to those who hear.

In place of rotten, other translations use such words as corrupt, unwholesome or foul.  Together they paint the picture.  The first impression might be that swearing is the primary example of what Paul had in mind, but it goes way beyond this.  Looking to the surrounding verses you see that Paul mentions falsehoods, lies, and slander which go along with the anger and bitterness of one's heart.

This verse can haunt you if you try to live up to it in you own strength.  I know that I try and fail.   But we can pray for more grace, more power more of Jesus Christ in our life.

"Grace is not simply leniency when we have sinned. Grace is the enabling gift of God not to sin. Grace is power, not just pardon."

John Piper

By God's grace we have forgiveness when we've sinned with out tongue and the enabling gift of God not to sin.  May we depend upon it today in our speech.

Blessings,
Mike

Ephesians 4:25-32

Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

25 Since you put away lying, Speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, because we are members of one another. 26 Be angry and do not sin. Don't let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and don't give the Devil an opportunity. 28 The thief must no longer steal. Instead, he must do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share with anyone in need. 29 No rotten talk should come from your mouth, but only what is good for the building up of someone in need, in order to give grace to those who hear. 30 And don't grieve God's Holy Spirit, who sealed you for the day of redemption. 31 All bitterness, anger and wrath, insult and slander must be removed from you, along with all wickedness. 32 And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.
