1 John 2:28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. New International Version (NIV)
Yesterday we considered what it might look like to have the "power of Christ in me". In today's verse John encourages, his readers, listeners, followers and us to continue in Him. Other translations use the words, abide, remain or to "stay one" with Him.
Looking at the preceding verses, John shows concern for these Christians, knowing that there are deceivers out in the world trying to lead them astray from adhering to the things that they had been taught, believed, followed and put into practice. To abide, remain or continue indicates a way of life. The old has gone, the new has come, let us not go back to the old path arrayed with new trappings.
J. M. Boice writes, "Truth, as it is contained in Scriptures and as it is revealed in Jesus Christ, is an objective standard. It provides a basis for making judgments, and it reveals error. Consequently, Christians should be concerned with truth, should seek to understand it with increasing fullness, and should proclaim it to the world...... The Word abides in Christians, but for this reason they are to allow it to abide in them increasingly."
Just as we desire that the little children in our homes grow and mature, so it is with God's children as addressed in this passage. It is in keeping with what others have taught in the New Testament.
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace (undeserved favor, spiritual strength) and recognition and knowledge and understanding of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (the Messiah). To Him [be] glory (honor, majesty, and splendor) both now and to the day of eternity. Amen (so be it)! Amplified Bible (AMP)
In Christ,
Mike

1 John 2:26-28 Amplified Bible (AMP)
26 I write this to you with reference to those who would deceive you [seduce and lead you astray].
27 But as for you, the anointing (the sacred appointment, the unction) which you received from Him abides [permanently] in you; [so] then you have no need that anyone should instruct you. But just as His anointing teaches you concerning everything and is true and is no falsehood, so you must abide in (live in, never depart from) Him [being rooted in Him, knit to Him], just as [His anointing] has taught you [to do].
28 And now, little children, abide (live, remain permanently) in Him, so that when He is made visible, we may have and enjoy perfect confidence (boldness, assurance) and not be ashamed and shrink from Him at His coming.
