Deuteronomy 11:18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. New International Version (NIV)
It's been great to have our kids and grandkids around the house this past week to celebrate Christmas together. There will be memories that we'll treasure for our lifetimes, as long as we remember them. I plan on writing down some of those things to pull out and share as we celebrate Christmas years from now. We especially enjoyed some of the words said by our grandchildren. For me, one example was what my granddaughter Layna. We had taken the kids to the Alamance Children's Museum where they had a great time. Layna was anxious to play in one of the interactive displays and I was in her way. My four and a half year old granddaughter said "step aside gramps". It was precious. Whether I write it down or not, I hope that it will stay "fixed" in my heart and mind, always with me.
Today's verse tells us that we are to have God's Word "fixed" in our minds. The image it to have it etched in stone where it is visible and indelible. Doing so requires memorization so that we can recall it, remember it when needed for comfort, encouragement or warning. It needs to affect the way we live.
Pastor Greg Laurie writes, "Certainly it is good to carry a Bible in your briefcase, pocket, or purse; but the best place to carry the Bible is in your heart. It is good to go through the Word of God, but it is better for the Word of God to go through you. It is great to mark your Bible, but it is best if your Bible marks you. It must affect the way you live."
As we head towards the new year. What are some of the events that will remain fixed in your mind? What verses or passages of scripture have you memorized to remain fixed in your mind?
In Christ,
Mike
