Verse of the Day 10/1

Colossians 1:16-17  For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.  English Standard Version (ESV)

Today's verse brings back thoughts and images to Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1, in the beginning God, in the beginning was the Word and that in John 1:14 the Word became flesh in Jesus and dwelt among us.  All these things are foundational to our faith.  But the verses also bring attention that everyone has to consider.  Either everything came from something or Someone or it came from nothing.

Many people think that it is a stretch to believe in creation, that the world was created as we believe, called into existence by God.  But it is a bigger stretch to believe that everything came from nothing.  As Christians these verses also remind us that we believe in and serve a God who did not just create the world like a watchmaker who created, "wound it up" and let it go.  This verse reminds us that he "holds all things together".  This should be a constant reminder for us on good days and even when things seem to be falling apart.

The God we believe in, the God we serve and the God we pray to is the one who holds things together.  If you feel like your world is falling apart, turn to the One who truly holds things together.

In Christ,
Mike

Colossians 1:16-18The Message (MSG)

Christ Holds It All Together

15-18 We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God's original purpose in everything created. For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment. And when it comes to the church, he organizes and holds it together, like a head does a body.
