Verse of the Day 9/22

Verse of the Day 9/22

Psalm 91:1-2 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High

will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, "My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."  English Standard Version (ESV)

In our society we are taught early on in life that in an emergency, if we have access to a phone, simply dial 911.  A ship that is faltering on the sea will send out a distress signal and S.O.S., or a flare to draw the attention of any other ship in the area that may be able to see or pick up the signal.  I've heard it said before that Psalm 91:1 is the emergency prayer of the Christian.  Whenever we are afraid, in trouble or distress we can send up a prayer to God, who is is with us, and He hears us.

The other distress signals are sent out to anyone who may see or hear and is willing to help.  The 91:1 prayer to God is a call to the God who hears, it is a direct call to Him, and we trust that He hears and in His time and in His way, He will answer and calm our fears, no matter what they may be.  Most of the dangers or terrors in this psalm are left undefined and it opens this psalm up to virtually any situation that we need to apply it to as a reason to call out to God.

As I was writing and thinking about this today, a stanza from the Amy Grant song "Thy Word" came to mind:

When I feel afraid, think I've lost my way,
still you're there right beside me.
And nothing will I fear
as long as you are near.
You are near me to the end.

Whatever fears, challenges or trials you may be facing today, know that He is there beside you.  Do not fear, call out to Him, trust in Him and He will be your refuge and fortress in this time be it morning, noon or night.

Psalm 91:1-6The Message (MSG)

91 1 You who sit down in the High God's presence,
spend the night in Shaddai's shadow,
Say this: "God, you're my refuge.
I trust in you and I'm safe!"
That's right—he rescues you from hidden traps,
    shields you from deadly hazards.
His huge outstretched arms protect you—
    under them you're perfectly safe;
his arms fend off all harm.
Fear nothing—not wild wolves in the night,
not flying arrows in the day,
Not disease that prowls through the darkness,
not disaster that erupts at high noon.
