James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. English Standard Version (ESV)
For today's verse we'll return to the passage in James one from yesterday where we considered that we are to be quick to listen and slow to speak. To listen is to hear. We can't truly hear what someone else is saying if we talk over them. When it comes to God's Word and what He has to say to us we need to listen, and hear what He is saying to us.
When God speaks, it is the same One who spoke the world into existence, turned darkness into light, brought dead back to life, and stilled the crashing waves that is speaking to us, will we listen?
We recently sang the Steven Curtis Chapman song in church, "We Are Listening". The chorus goes like this, "We are listening, we are listening, breathe your living word into us, God breathe your living word through us. We are listening, we are listening, let us hear the sound of Your voice, and the beating of Your heart."
A simple line from that chorus is the key "breathe your living word through us". It is not just being breathed into us it is through us, it will come through, flow through in our actions, IF we are truly listening, hearing. If that is not happening then the final words of the verse will be the case, we are deceiving ourselves, fooling ourselves, kidding ourselves. If we examine our lives and have any inclination that that is the case, get up, get back on your feet and follow Him, commit to being a "doer".
May the old hymn, Channels Only, be true of us.
How I praise Thee, precious Savior,
That Thy love laid hold of me;
Thou hast saved and cleansed and filled me
That I might Thy channel be.
That Thy love laid hold of me;
Thou hast saved and cleansed and filled me
That I might Thy channel be.
- Refrain:
Channels only, blessed Master,
But with all Thy wondrous pow'r
Flowing through us, Thou canst use us
Every day and every hour.Blessings,MikeJames 1:22-24The Message (MSG)22-24 Don't fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don't act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.
