Verse of the Day 3/9

Verse of the Day 3/9

Isaiah 40:22    It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
    and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
    and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;  English Standard Version (ESV)

Isaiah 40 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible.  It contains some of the most comforting and encouraging words delivered to us by the prophet Isaiah as He communicated the Words of God.   The God who created the heavens and all there is.  Many of us may have no idea of the grandeur of the stars, dimmed by the lights of the city and surrounding area as well as pollution in the air.  But if you have the opportunity to go to the mountains on a clear night you are blown away by what is out there.  The Milky Way as a broad swath across the sky.  The God who stretched this out like a curtain, who arranged the galaxies cares for us little grasshoppers.

If you read through the chapter you won't find complex, deep theological words, men like to use those to sound eloquent and educated, but the prophet brings God's Word to us in simple terms but reveal the greatness of God .  J. Gresham Machen, almost a century ago, writes, "In the Bible there is that which meets every need of man, which answers to his every mood, which speaks to every heart.  No one who comes to this feast need go empty away; and there are times in every life when even the least considered of the things that the Bible contains are just what is needed for the soul.  So there is a place in the nurture of Christian life, among other things, for the majestic poetry of Isaiah."

The final verses of this 40th chapter have comforted me and my family many times over the years.  I was reminded of them again after a recent facebook post by my wife after her cancer surgery, she shared a picture of us with the caption "our first walk in the neighborhood".  The Lord has renewed her strength, we walk and don't grow weary.

Isaiah 40:28-31   Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
    and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.  English Standard Version (ESV)

Praise the Lord that He cares for us grasshoppers.

Blessings,

Mike

Isaiah 40:21-31 New Living Translation (NLT)

21 Haven't you heard? Don't you understand?
    Are you deaf to the words of God—
the words he gave before the world began?
    Are you so ignorant?
22 God sits above the circle of the earth.
    The people below seem like grasshoppers to him!
He spreads out the heavens like a curtain
    and makes his tent from them.
23 He judges the great people of the world
    and brings them all to nothing.
24 They hardly get started, barely taking root,
    when he blows on them and they wither.
    The wind carries them off like chaff.
25 "To whom will you compare me?
    Who is my equal?" asks the Holy One.
26 Look up into the heavens.
    Who created all the stars?
He brings them out like an army, one after another,
    calling each by its name.
Because of his great power and incomparable strength,
    not a single one is missing.
27 O Jacob, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles?
    O Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights?
28 Have you never heard?
    Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
    No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
29 He gives power to the weak
    and strength to the powerless.
30 Even youths will become weak and tired,
    and young men will fall in exhaustion.
31 But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
    They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
    They will walk and not faint.
