Verse of the Day 9/15
1 Peter 5:6-7 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. New King James Version (NKJV)
One of Frank Sinatra's biggest hits was the song "My Way" which boasted of independence without regrets as he sang "regrets, I've had a few but then again to few to mention" and stood tall and did things my way. It is the opposite of what we see in today's verse written by Peter. He too had made a few mistakes and we know of some of them from the scriptures. He was known to be impetuous, prone do jump the gun and do and say things his way before turning to Jesus for forgiveness, help and grace to move on.
The benefits of humbling yourself and submitting to God are shown in the same sentence in today's verses. We can cast "all our cares" on Him, knowing that He cares for us and will exalt, lift up those who reach out to Him. Think of Peter reaching his hand out to Jesus when he was called to get out of the boat; walk on water with Jesus but began to sink because he took his eyes off Jesus to look at the raging see.
Pastor John Piper writes, " I — the Lord, your Maker — I am he who comforts you, who promises to take care of you; and those who threaten you are mere men who die. So your fear must mean that you do not trust me — and even though you are not sure that your own resources will take care of you, yet you opt for fragile self-reliance, rather than faith in my future grace. So all your trembling — weak as it is — reveals pride. The remedy? Turn from self-reliance to God-reliance, and put your faith in the all-sufficient power of future grace."
Are you more prone to do things your way as the famous Sinatra song boasts or are you willing to humble yourself; submit yourself to God; cast your cares on Him and know that He will lift you up?
