Verse of the Day 1/11

Verse of the Day 1/11

Matthew 5:15-16  No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.  New Living Translation (NLT)

If you've started the year with a new resolution to read through the Bible, or at least the New Testament, it is likely that you would have read today's verses.  If you haven't done so, there is still time to do it.  These verses come from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 thru 7 where He gives us some of the most practical teaching on living the Christian life.  It is not just about knowing what Jesus said and knowing what He would do, it is about living it.  In doing so we will be well on the way of fulfilling God's purposes in our lives.  We can look back to Micah 6:8 where the Lord calls His people to:" do justly,To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God."

Ancient words to be sure but practical then and through the ages, for now and forevermore.  Will it be easy to do in our messed up society?  No, but we can be courageous.  I'll return once again to some of the words to "Courageous" from Casting Crowns.

Seek justice. Love mercy
Walk humbly with your god

In the war of the mind I will make my stand (seek justice. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your god)
In the battle of the heart and the battle of the hand (seek justice. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your god)

We were made to be courageous
And we're taking back the fight
We were made to be courageous
And it starts with us tonight

As the old children's chorus goes, "hide it under a bushel?, NO!, I'm gonna let it shine."

Matthew 5:13-16 New King James Version (NKJV)

Believers Are Salt and Light

13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
