Verse of the Day 12/4

Colossians 3:12-14

Character of the New Man

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

Today's passage came up in my devotions this morning.  I normally post one or two verses, but how could I post verses 12 and 13 and omit how verse 14 begins, "and over all these virtues put on love". Yesterday we considered how God's mercies are new every morning. In today's verses Paul tells us that we are to "put on" tender mercies. Clothe yourselves with them wear them, put them on display for all to see. Not for the applause but for the glory of God.

As I was writing these words the song that I learned in Sunday school came to mind, "I Will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord Forever" came to mind, singing of His mercies and faithfulness, singing His praises forever.  Singing those praises may not be in words but in our actions as we put on kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, forgiveness and love.

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever,
I will sing, I will sing,
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever,
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord.

With my mouth will I make known
Thy faithfulness, Thy faithfulness,
With my mouth will I make known
Thy faithfulness to all generations,

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever,

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord.

Put on His tender mercies today, and show it with the qualities mentioned.

Colossians 3:12-17

12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
