Romans 6:11(ESV) So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Over the weekend our church held its annual baptism service at a nearby lake. In my devotions this morning I read from Romans 6:1-14. It is a wonderful passage relating to baptism and what it means to the Christian. Some of the words commonly used in believers baptism services come from Romans 6:4 " We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." (ESV).
Have you experienced this "newness of life? It is a spring in your step, joy in your heart, and hope for the future. There is a heightened awareness to what is going on around you, your senses are operating as they should. Fears, doubts and anxieties have been relieved, cast away. It does not come naturally or easily, we must "consider" our standing, our place in Christ. It is not living a new life for ourselves, we are alive to God, to serve Him and take joy in His purposes.
Several old hymns came to mind. I'll close with the words to "Living for Jesus" which I probaby quote several times a year.
Living for Jesus, a life that is true,
Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.
Refrain:
O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee,
For Thou, in Thy atonement, didst give Thyself for me;
I own no other Master, my heart shall be Thy throne;
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.
Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.
Refrain:
O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee,
For Thou, in Thy atonement, didst give Thyself for me;
I own no other Master, my heart shall be Thy throne;
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.
Living for Jesus Who died in my place,
Bearing on Calv'ry my sin and disgrace;
Such love constrains me to answer His call,
Follow His leading and give Him my all.
In Christ,
Mike

Romans 6:4-11 English Standard Version (ESV)
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
