Verse of the Day 11/5
Hebrews 2:1Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. English Standard Version (ESV)
Yesterday's verse from Titus 3 was about "learning to devote ourselves to good works". Being devoted, being diligent, being committed requires us to pay attention, to focus not only on the job at hand, but to fix our eyes on Jesus for the power to accomplish what needs to be done.
Last Sunday our church sang the song "Fix My Eyes" by For King and Country. It has been going through my mind since Sunday morning.
Love like I'm not scared
Give when it's not fair
Live life for another
Take time for a brother
Fight for the weak ones
Speak out for freedom
Find faith in the battle
Stand tall but above it all
Fix my eyes on you
I fix my eyes on you
If we don't keep focused we all know that we'll tend to drift, to become lazy, to let opportunities pass by. If we are to "find faith in the battle" and "stand tall above it all" we'll realize that it doesn't come from our own strength or our own plans. We must fix our eyes on Jesus and His Word.
John Piper writes, "Drifting is a deadly thing in the Christian life. And the remedy to it, according to Hebrews 2:1, is, "Pay close attention to what you have heard." That is, consider what God is saying in his Son Jesus. Fix your eyes on what God is saying and doing in the Son of God, Jesus Christ."
May we pay close attention to what we hear from God's Word, have a firm grip on it (The Message) as we fix our eyes on the Savior, and stand tall above it all and do the good works.
May we pay close attention to what we hear from God's Word, have a firm grip on it (The Message) as we fix our eyes on the Savior, and stand tall above it all and do the good works.
Blessings,
Mike

Hebrews 2:1-4The Message (MSG)
2 1-4 It's crucial that we keep a firm grip on what we've heard so that we don't drift off. If the old message delivered by the angels was valid and nobody got away with anything, do you think we can risk neglecting this latest message, this magnificent salvation? First of all, it was delivered in person by the Master, then accurately passed on to us by those who heard it from him. All the while God was validating it with gifts through the Holy Spirit, all sorts of signs and miracles, as he saw fit.
