John 7:38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" English Standard Version (ESV)
Proverbs 4:24 instructs us to guard our hearts, "for from it flow the springs of life". Coupled with today's verse, we are reminded that something is flowing from us. It comes from our hearts and is shown in our speech and also in our actions.
When we hear political speeches or just normal conversations during the day they reveal something about the people we come in contact with or listen to. When someone says one thing today and the opposite tomorrow or in front of a different group what is flowing from their mouths reveals what is inside. What is the motivation behind that? To do good or to deceive.
The verses should cause us to step back, to take a look at out speech and our actions. They reveal what is in our hearts. What comes out the words we speak, is it anger, venom, gossip or is it encouragement, love, compassion and hope. Hopefully it is the latter. If Christ is living in us, in our hearts and minds it should show in our speech and in our actions. From Him we receive countless blessings, which in turn should flow from us.
I can't think of the word flow without thinking of the doxology, for out of God's heart flow the blessing of life, of all creation. We'll close with that today.
Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
In Christ,
Mike

John 7:37-39New Living Translation (NLT)
Jesus Promises Living Water
37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, "Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, 'Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'"[a] 39 (When he said "living water," he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given,[b] because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)
