Verse of the Day 3/13/15
1 Peter 1:13 Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be serious and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
Yesterday from the short letter of Jude we considered how we are called to "contend for the faith" to be ready to take a stand. Today's verse come from 1 Peter from another fairly short letter where we are called to "be ready for action". It speaks of a preparedness, a seriousness as we abide in God's Word and apply it in our lives.
In this preparation John MacArthur writes that we are "to pull in all the loose ends of one's thinking, by rejecting the hindrances of the world and focusing on the future grace of God." Taking a step back and looking at our lives in this modern day, our lives can easily become frayed with plenty of loose ends that divide our attention. Loose ends can lead us to come apart at the seams if we're not careful.
In the HCSB the verse calls for us to be "serious", other translations say that we are to be "sober minded". You get the picture. We are to think clearly, have focus, and be prepared to act with spiritual decisiveness as God reveals His will for us in His Word and through prayer and giving thought to these things during our day.
May we "roll up our sleeves and put our mind in gear" (The Message) and be ready for action today.
1 Peter 1:13-16The Message (MSG)
A Future in God
13-16 So roll up your sleeves, put your mind in gear, be totally ready to receive the gift that's coming when Jesus arrives. Don't lazily slip back into those old grooves of evil, doing just what you feel like doing. You didn't know any better then; you do now. As obedient children, let yourselves be pulled into a way of life shaped by God's life, a life energetic and blazing with holiness. God said, "I am holy; you be holy."
