Verse of the Day 4/7
Matthew 16:15-16 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" 16 Simon Peter replied,"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." English Standard Version (ESV)
Having just come from the Easter holiday and celebration today's verse is fitting. Remembering the resurrection that we just celebrated it should be easy for us to say with Peter "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." But as with Christmas and other celebrations the events themselves pass and we transition back to our day to day lives.
The disciples had already acknowledged Jesus as the Son of God, but Peters additional statement that He is the Christ or Messiah, the Annointed One is significant. Unlike other responses that Jesus was a prophet in the tradition of Isaiah, Elijah or Jeremiah who were messengers, Jesus is the One. He was and is to be the Deliverer, the Overcomer. But Peter and many others would have in mind a deliverer from Roman oppression or oppression as Moses did with Pharaoh, or evenwithin their religion. Jesus came as a deliver from the fear of death, the cares of the world and deliverance from sin and its powers over us.
It was this statement that Jesus responded with "on this rock", on this statement, not on Peter himself, He would build His church. We're overcomers.
I can be a Christian music snob at times, not really caring much for some of the Christian "Pop" music, but these verses and thoughts brought my mind to the song "Overcomer" by Mandisa. It is a reminder as we go back to the things we face in our day to day lives that we ARE overcomers, no matter what we face because we have the Christ, the Overcomer with us and He will be with us on the final day.

13 When Jesus arrived in the villages of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "What are people saying about who the Son of Man is?"
14 They replied, "Some think he is John the Baptizer, some say Elijah, some Jeremiah or one of the other prophets."
15 He pressed them, "And how about you? Who do you say I am?"
16 Simon Peter said, "You're the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
