Verse of the Day 5/22
Psalm 130:5-6 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
And in His word I do hope.
6 My soul waits for the Lord
More than those who watch for the morning—
Yes, more than those who watch for the morning. New King James Version (NKJV)
In yesterday's post, Jesus told Peter and John to "watch and pray", two important things that we should keep in mind and do. Today's verses came to me as part of my daily reading in the psalms. God just has a way of reinforcing the things that we need to see and hear when we need it.
This psalm is know as a "psalm of ascent", one that was read and sang on the way to worship in Jerusalem. It goes to show that even when things aren't going the way that we would like them to, we can still make the effort to worship. The Message says, "the bottom has fallen out of my life" and he is calling for God to hear his cry. While he prays, he also looks to God's word and waits and watches for God's reply like the watchmen who wait for the morning after a long night of staying awake, being on guard. The psalmist is looking for a better day, a happy day.
I'm reminded of the old hymn "Happy Day", especially the following lines:
Happy day, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away!
He taught me how to watch and pray,
and live rejoicing every day.
Happy day, happy day,
when Jesus washed my sins away!
Do you want this in your life, to live rejoicing every day, even if the "bottom has fallen out"? The watchman was familiar with the long dark nights, waiting for an attack of the enemy. But he knew that the coming hours would bring light and hope of a brighter day. We may not know what tomorrow brings but we can rejoice in the happy day that Jesus took our sins away and we can also look forward to the brightest day when He will wipe all tears away and deliver us to eternal joy.

Psalm 130:1-6The Message (MSG)
A Pilgrim Song
130 1-2 Help, God—the bottom has fallen out of my life!
Master, hear my cry for help!
Listen hard! Open your ears!
Listen to my cries for mercy.
3-4 If you, God, kept records on wrongdoings,
who would stand a chance?
As it turns out, forgiveness is your habit,
and that's why you're worshiped.
5-6 I pray to God—my life a prayer—
and wait for what he'll say and do.
My life's on the line before God, my Lord,
waiting and watching till morning,
waiting and watching till morning.
