Psalm 121:1-2English Standard Version (ESV)
My Help Comes from the Lord
A Song of Ascents.
121 I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
I spent the weekend hiking in Yosemite National Park with a friend, and hike we did, close to 35 miles. We saw all kinds of wonderful sights. Often we'd see a mountain in the distance but it could take a couple of hours to hike to the vantage point to get the view that you were hoping for. We found many of them. Taking those treks, those hikes took a lot of effort, but they were worth it.
Today's verses came to mind often over the weekend, but it wasn't the lakes, streams or mountains that we were worshipping , we were worshipping the God that had created all of this majesty and grandeur. It also brought to mind how great this God is, the creator of the heavens and earth cares for me (what is man that you are mindful of him - Psalm 8).
I posted the heading to today's verses because it lays the groundwork. The psalm is a "song of ascent" as worshippers would be making the pilgrimage up to Mount Zion the mountain of God. They weren't worshipping the mountain, they were worshipping God. Their help in life and ours, does not come from the effort, does not come God's creation itself, it comes from Him. Yet when we stop and look in "awesome wonder" we can't help but worship our great God who created all of this and yet cares for all us.
Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed;
Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook, and feel he gentle breeze;
Consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed;
Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
When through the woods and forest glades I wander
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook, and feel he gentle breeze;
Blessings,
Mike
Psalm 121English Standard Version (ESV)
My Help Comes from the Lord
A Song of Ascents.
121 I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
