Verse of the Day 12/13
John 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. English Standard Version (ESV)
Christmas is a time of giving, we celebrate Christmas because of the greatest gift that was given to us, the gift of God's One and Only begotten Son (John 3:16). The passage from John chapter 3 is most known for verse 16, but today's verse which directly follows gives us the intended purpose "that the world may be saved through Him". He was given for our deliverance, which is why today's verse says that He didn't come to condemn the world, but to offer salvation to it.
Our Pastor Bob pointed out in his sermon this past Sunday that the "condemning" in the verse deals with religion. The Pharisees were all about this, all over this, quick to point out shortcomings and short on grace. Jesus in His life, was not this way, the woman at the well and the woman caught in adultery are a couple of examples, you can probably think of others. He did tell the woman caught in adultery "go and sin no more", but it was after He had offered forgiveness, by His grace.
You will see many manger scenes this season. When you do, you should not fail to see the cross in the manger scene. The purpose and plan of God in Jesus' birth was the cross and it is because of the cross and the price that He paid that if we believe and trust in Him there will be no condemnation, but salvation.
Praise the Savior, ye who know Him!
Who can tell how much we owe Him?
Gladly let us render to Him
All we are and have.
"God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again." John 3:17a The Message

John 3:17-18The Message (MSG)
16-18 "This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person's failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.
