Verse of the Day 2/15
2 Kings 25:30 As for his allowance, a regular allowance was given to him by the king, a portion for each day, for the rest of his life. Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
I read today's verse in a recent "Morning" devotional of Charles Spurgeon. As I read it I was reminded of sweepstakes winners that you hear of on TV where the winner will receive "$5,000 a week for the rest of their lives". The winnings may be more or less than the $5,000 I mentioned, but you get the point. From that point on they would receive enough to meet their needs, to cover their living expenses for the rest of their lives.
In the passage from 2 Kings, King Jehoiachin of Judah had been in exile for 37 years. A new king took charge in Babylon and decided to take care and show compassion on this former king who had resided in exile for these many years. Now he would dine with the king for the rest of his days. What a change took place when this king came into his life.
These thoughts combined to bring me to my son Jeff. He's been disabled for more than half of his life. He is totally dependent upon his parents (and others) for his daily needs, but they are met. He receives food, shelter, clothing, gets out into the community and has relationships with many people. On top of that he doesn't worry about where his next meal will come from, he doesn't worry about tomorrow or his future. He knows that he will be taken care of. He trusts, he loves his family and he knows, loves, trusts and puts his eternal future and hopes in Jesus. One of my favorite sayings of his is "hope is my favorite thing to have".
Jeff's future, his hope is not built on, does not depend on winning some sweepstakes. He is being provide for ultimately by a King, Jesus, Lord of Heaven and earth. This hope should be our favorite thing to have as well.
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
Oh, may I then in Him be found,
Clothed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne!
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

2 Kings 25:30The Message (MSG)
27-30 When Jehoiachin king of Judah had been in exile for thirty-seven years, Evil-Merodach became king in Babylon and let Jehoiachin out of prison. This release took place on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month. The king treated him most courteously and gave him preferential treatment beyond anything experienced by the other political prisoners held in Babylon. Jehoiachin took off his prison garb and for the rest of his life ate his meals in company with the king. The king provided everything he needed to live comfortably.
