Verse of the Day 2/2
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. English Standard Version
In yesterday's verse from Acts chapter 1, Luke spoke of the Holy Spirit's power coming upon Jesus' followers, power that would work in us and flow through us in our lives. Today's verse also speaks of power, power that it in "the word of the cross" the gospel message. I'd like to take a look at a few "small" words in each of the verses that have big implications for us.
Acts 1:8 started off with "but you WILL receive power". It is not an if or a maybe, you will receive power. When we put our faith and trust in God, when we lean upon Him for wisdom and understanding, we will receive the power required to do what He has called us to do in His Word and to spread the gospel message in word and deed.
In today's verse which tells us that the word of the cross… IS the power of God". The IS is not for a moment in time, it is in the present tense, perfect tense, which is ongoing, continual, without end. People have tried to extinguish it, erase it, burn it and do everything to destroy and defeat it, but the word of the cross, the gospel message will continue because it IS the power of God and makes perfect sense to those that have received His power as spoken of in Acts 1:8.
"God in his wisdom took delight in using what the world considered dumb—preaching, of all things!—to bring those who trust him into the way of salvation." 1 Corinthians 1:21 The Message
It is perfect sense in the perfect tense.
Blessings,
Mike
1 Corinthians 1:18-21The Message (MSG)
18-21 The Message that points to Christ on the Cross seems like sheer silliness to those hellbent on destruction, but for those on the way of salvation it makes perfect sense. This is the way God works, and most powerfully as it turns out. It's written,
I'll turn conventional wisdom on its head,
I'll expose so-called experts as crackpots.
I'll expose so-called experts as crackpots.
So where can you find someone truly wise, truly educated, truly intelligent in this day and age? Hasn't God exposed it all as pretentious nonsense? Since the world in all its fancy wisdom never had a clue when it came to knowing God, God in his wisdom took delight in using what the world considered dumb—preaching, of all things!—to bring those who trust him into the way of salvation.
