Verse of the Day 5/10
Nehemiah 8:8
8 They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. New International Version (NIV)
My Old Testament reading this morning brought me to the book of Nehemiah, where God can be seen as the builder of broken walls and lives. In my study Bible today's verse is listed as the key verse in the book. Nehemiah felt the call of God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. His position as cupbearer to the king gave him access to make the request, risky in itself, just in the asking, but he followed through.
In today's passage, Ezra, the faithful scribe opens "the book" and delivered God's word to the people. We should take note that it any major building project in the church or any major rebuilding project in our lives, God's word, properly expounded upon and delivered will be the key foundation. Whether from the pulpit, in Bible studies, small groups, prayer meeting or other gatherings, God's word "made clear", so the people can understand it is imperative.
John MacArthur notes that "in this act of instruction, Ezra's personal commitment to study the law, practice it in his own life, and then teach it was reflected." How is this represented in our own lives – commitment to study, practice and teach His word to others." If we are to be builders, they are the necessary building blocks for doing it.
Ezra 7:10
10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel. English Standard Version (ESV)
May it be so with us.
Blessings,
Mike
Nehemiah 8:5-8The Message (MSG)
5-6 Ezra opened the book. Every eye was on him (he was standing on the raised platform) and as he opened the book everyone stood. Then Ezra praised God, the great God, and all the people responded, "Oh Yes! Yes!" with hands raised high. And then they fell to their knees in worship of God, their faces to the ground.
7-8 Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah, all Levites, explained The Revelation while people stood, listening respectfully. They translated the Book of The Revelation of God so the people could understand it and then explained the reading.
