Verse of the Day 1/4

Verse of the Day 1/4

2 Chronicles 14:11   Asa prayed:

Lord God, only you can help a powerless army defeat a stronger one. So we depend on you to help us. We will fight against this powerful army to honor your name, and we know that you won't be defeated. You are the Lord our God.   Contemporary English Version (CEV)

Today's verse came from my Old Testament reading for the day.  With yesterday's post from Psalm 14, written when David was faced with the prospect of taking on Goliath and expressing his confidence and hope in God today's verse shows a similar confidence.  David faced a daunting task of facing one giant, King Asa faced the prospect of taking on an army of a million men.

As you read through the books of Kings and Chronicles you read about the "good kings" and the bad ones.  The good ones were the ones who placed their hopes in God.  Those who ignored God and relied on their own means ended up being bad or even "evil" kings.

Continuing in the same theme as yesterday,  spiritually, we may be facing daunting or seemingly impossible odds and feel powerless ourselves.  In such times, we too need to remember that we have the Almighty with us and for us along with His angel armies.  May we too fight against our powerful challenges and "enemies" of the faith to honor God's name and have the same confidence that we will not be defeated because He won't be defeated.  He is Lord our God.

Asa was rewarded for his faith and who he put his faith and trust in.  May it be the same for us and may we not be like the foolish who rely solely on their own means to face the days battles.

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and pow'r are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us;
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.  (Martin Luther from Psalm 46)

2 Chronicles 14:9-15 English Standard Version (ESV)

Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men and 300 chariots, and came as far as Mareshah. 10 And Asa went out to meet him, and they drew up their lines of battle in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. 11 And Asa cried to the Lord his God, "O Lord, there is none like you to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, O Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. O Lord, you are our God; let not man prevail against you." 12 So the Lord defeated the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. 13 Asa and the people who were with him pursued them as far as Gerar, and the Ethiopians fell until none remained alive, for they were broken before the Lord and his army. The men of Judah[a] carried away very much spoil. 14 And they attacked all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the Lord was upon them. They plundered all the cities, for there was much plunder in them. 15 And they struck down the tents of those who had livestock and carried away sheep in abundance and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
