Verse of the Day 4/12
1 Chronicles 4:9-1 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name [a]Jabez, saying, "Because I bore him in pain." 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my [b]territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!" So God granted him what he requested. New King James Version.
Our men's Bibles study group just went through The Lord's Prayer from Matthew 6 this morning. In it Jesus was teaching His disciples how they were to pray. For today's verse we go to a prayer found in the Old Testament book of 1 Chronicles, tucked in amongst a list of genealogies we find this gem. It shows that true prayer has not changed over the centuries.
The key components that Jesus outlined were that the Father's name be honored; that He brings His kingdom to earth; that He will do His will; that He will daily provide for our needs; He will forgive us for our sins; and protect us from the temptations that will come our way.
In today's verses, Jabez asks God to bless him; keep him; and free him; but the overarching goal behind these requests was that by God answering this prayer that God would expand his sphere of influence to make Him known. Much like Abraham in Genesis 12, Jabez would be blessed in order to be a blessing while maintaining a close relationships with his Heavenly Father.
May we have a similar prayer, a similar relationship with God our Father, Maker or heaven and earth, and the keep of our souls.
