Verse of the Day 6/12

Verse of the Day 6/12

James 1:21

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.   New King James Version

Here in the United States, pro football scrimmages have been taking place and soon training camp with begin as teams hope to win the prize, the Super Bowl Championship for the coming season.  For today's verse I'd like to focus on one word in this verse, "receive". Us football fans can probably recall Super Bowls and countless other games that were won in the last second on a touchdown pass, often a tight end such as Dwight Clark receiving the pass at the back of the end zone from Joe Montana to win the Super Bowl.  But to win, he had to receive that pass; take it in.  If he let it slip through his hands, he, and his team would lose the game.

To put himself in a position to receive that pass he had to fight off blocks at the line of scrimmage and then ward off pass defenders to leap and make the catch. In these verses, spiritually we have to ward of filthiness and avoid the blocks of wickedness, and receive the word and apply it in our lives.  That is the receiving portion.  We don't just read it and let it on past, we must receive it, take it in.  When we do, we win, the Word has the power to save our souls through accepting what God has given us.

When we receive that word, take it in, it is planted in our souls.   Don't let it slip through your hands, take it in, receive it.

God causes all things to grow
Through every season we know
He will guard the life
That He's planted in our souls
And when we feel the cold winds blow
We'll hold to what we know
God causes all things to grow  (God Causes All Things to Grow - Steve Green)

James 1:19-24
New King James Version

19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
