Vere of the Day 11/9
Hebrews 5:8-9New King James Version
Hebrews 5:8-9
New King James Version
8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
Today's verses came up in the read through the New Testament plan that I follow. The passage tells of Jesus' being our Great High Priest, how He came, was sent by the Father to be tested and tempted as a man, He remained obedient despite His sufferings and now intercedes for us with the empathy of someone who knows what we're going through.
But what I'd like to focus on today is the "enternal salvation" mentioned here. We may sometimes think of our salvation as the day we received Christ as our Savior and were saved. This is true but it isn't the full story/. Our salvation is not an event, but ii is something that becomes part of who we are. It will carry on for the rest of our lives and iton eternity. Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith. It had a beginning, but it is something that keeps coming, keeps growing and keeps developing in us.
Alexander Smellie writes, "And there is the wonder of its continuousness. Salvation keeps coming--it does not cease. It flows, and deepens, and broadens. God does not weary, though there are ten thousand reasons why He should. The Savior does not lose His sympathy and grace. The Holy Spirit goes on performing His good work ."
Any time I see those words "eternal salvation" I can't help but remember the old Fanny Crosby hymn.
- Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Sing, O earth—His wonderful love proclaim!
Hail Him! Hail Him! Highest archangels in glory;
Strength and honor give to His holy Name!
Like a shepherd, Jesus will guard His children,
In His arms He carries them all day long.- Refrain:
Praise Him! Praise Him! Tell of His excellent greatness;
Praise Him! Praise Him! Ever in joyful song!
- Refrain:
- Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
For our sins He suffered, and bled, and died.
He our Rock, our hope of eternal salvation,
Hail Him! Hail Him! Jesus the Crucified.
Sound His praises! Jesus who bore our sorrows,
Love unbounded, wonderful, deep and strong.
Blessings,
Mike
