Verse of the Day 11/4

Verse of the Day 11/4

John 1:16
New International Version

16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.

Other translations for this verse state that we have received "grace upon grace".  The NIV is slightly different but tells us we received grace in the place of grace already given.  It is heaping grace upon grace  but gives a different picture.

David Jeremiah explains it well as he writes, "The idea is that from God's abundance, we keep receiving grace after grace, like ocean waves that come one after another, bringing never-ceasing blessings to us.  God is good and gracious! Thank Him for His blessings that come to you, one after another, today! "

Leon Morris writes that: "John means that as one piece of divine grace (so to speak) recedes it is replaced by another. God's grace to his people is continuous and is never exhausted."  It is a good picture, like the waves of the sea as one waver rolls in and then recedes, it is immediately followed by another wave in a never ending cycle.  So it is with God's grace.

The question is, have you received or are you ready to receive His grace, marvelous, infinite and matchless?

I'm reminded of the old hymn:

1 Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary's mount out-poured–
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt.

Refrain:
Grace, grace, God's grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God's grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin!

2 Sin and despair, like the sea-waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater– yes, grace untold–
Points to the Refuge, the mighty Cross. [Refrain]

3 Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
All who are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?

Blessings,
Mike

Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace.  NIV

John 1:14-18
English Standard Version

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son[a] from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.'") 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.[b] 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God,[c] who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.
