Verse of the Day 6/27

Verse of the Day 6/27

1 Samuel 16:7
New King James Version

But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have [a]refused him. For
the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

Today's verse gives us an indication of what is most important in a person, it is the quality of the heart.  Saul had been chosen as Israel's first king largely due to the fact that he looked the part, he was "taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward".  You might say he was head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd.  The crowd got what they wanted with disastrous results.

We know of David's heart towards God and many of the Psalms that he has written reveal this to us.  That doesn't mean he was perfect, we all know of his shortcomings, but his heart was after God and after he had fallen, he turned back to his heavenly father.

In today's society people are the same.  They look for someone that looks the part, whether it be a politicialn, a CEO or sometime even a pastor.  But we should not be that way, we should we willing to look beyond outward appearances and look for the qualities of the heart- love, kindness, compassion and encouragement. Jesus is our eternal king and He deserves our devotion for the love that He has poured out, lavished on us.

King of endless worth
No one could express
How much You deserve
Though I'm weak and poor
All I have is Yours
Every single breath

I'll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You, it's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You, it's all about You, Jesus
I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You, it's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You, it's all about You, Jesus.     (Michael W. Smith - The Heart of Worship)

1 Samuel 16:1-7
New King James Version

David Anointed King

16 Now the Lord said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have [a]provided Myself a king among his sons."

And Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me."

But the Lord said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.' Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you."

So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, "Do you come peaceably?"

And he said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify[b] yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.

So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before Him!"

But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have [c]refused him. For[d] the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
