Acts 4:33

33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

As I look back on the last months of Jean's life, I was amazed at the grace she showed in how she lived with joy and still with hope.  It was evident that God's grace was upon her.  We can read many verses and passages in the Bible that speak of God's grace but it is in the hard times that God goes above and beyond that and gives great grace.  We also read of God's love for us speaking of how the faithfulness of the  Lord endures forever though all circumstances.

Psalm 117:2 For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!

John Piper writes, "The power to witness with faithfulness and effectiveness did not come mainly from memories of grace; it came from the new arrivals of "great grace." "Great grace was upon them all." That's the way it was for the apostles, and that's the way it will be for us in our ministry of witnessing.....Whatever added signs and wonders God may show to amplify our witness to Christ, they will come the same way they came for Stephen. "And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people" (Acts 6:8). Grace was arriving from God for all that Stephen needed — eventually all that he would need to die"

Whatever we are facing today, God will provide the grace, the great grace that we need to face the challenges of the day.

32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.

2 Corinthians 5:7-8

7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Today's verses and passage take on different meaning when going through grief and the loss of a loved one. The "groans" (verse 2 below) that we experience in our bodies, whether our own suffering of that of losing another is hard to bear. But bear we must. What does bring comfort is knowing that those who have departed are now with the Lord where someday we will be joining them and all Christians who have gone before us.

We are called to lean on Him, trust in Him.  It is a process and each moment we have an opportunity to trust God. George Seevers writes that "contentment is embracing the providence of God."

I know that I have quoted this song recently, but the words fit with the verse and with my heart this morning.  At a time when I perhaps question most the wisdom of God's plan, I still must trust Him and believe in Him and walk by faith in the power He provides.

And never have I known
Anything so hard to understand
And never have I questioned more
The wisdom of God's plan
But through the cloud of tears
I see the Father smile and say 'well done.'
And I imagine you

Our Heavenly Dwelling

5 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on[a] we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Psalm 27:4-5

that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
    and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble
    he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
    and set me high upon a rock.

As I mentioned yesterday, my devotions, my Bible reading has been done through the lens of observing my wife Jean's love and devotion to the Lord through her long battle with cancer. Even though her challenges grew day by day and month by month as her time approached she continued to dwell in His word, in His sanctuary and felt safe in her etrernal destiny

The last two verses of the psalm spoke to me this morning as the one who was left behind, for now.  But I too, wait for that day with a diferent attitude.  I need to "be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord".

Psalm 27:13-14

    I will see the goodness of the Lord
    in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;

    and wait for the Lord.

i am counting on the goodness of God.

Acts 20:24

24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

I am amazed and I am thankful of how the Lord has been guiding me through scripture through my time of grief. Day by day I read different passages that have been placed in my path with a message for my heart.  Today's verse is another reminder for me of Jean.  She loved her ministry but more than that she loved the Lord and held onto Him as her time here ebbed away.

John Piper, in his devotional for today, struck home with me and with my heart as he writes:

Fulfilling your ministry is more important than staying alive. This conviction is what makes the lives of radically devoted people so inspiring to watch. Most of them speak the way Paul did about his ministry here in Acts 20:24: "I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus." Doing the ministry that God gives us to do is more important than life.

You may think you need to save your life in order to do your ministry. On the contrary, how you lose your life may be the capstone of your ministry. It certainly was for Jesus — only in his thirties.

We need not fret about keeping ourselves alive in order to finish our ministry. God alone knows the appointed time of our service. He will decide when our death is not an interruption of our ministry, but the last act of our ministry. 

That was Jean.  She was fulfiling her ministry until the day she died, it was more important than staying alive.  I needed to read that and grasp that.  I must keep that in mind as I go about each day and keep in mind her life verse John 3:30 He must become greater I must become less."  It involves a closer walk.

Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I'll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,

"You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; 20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, 21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.[a] 22 And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by[b] the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. 24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again.
