Through the Bible - Jeremiah 35-36, Hebrews 1
Good morning,
How would you define a saint? The first word out of many mouths would be mother Teressa. What would be the response if you were to tell someone, especially a non-Christian that you wanted to be "holy"? They may feel that you are being self righteous or "holier than thou".
For today's verse we'll go to Colossians 1 to the introduction from Paul to the church there. He doesn't specifically address "holy people" but saints.
Colossians 1:1-2 (Amplified Bible) PAUL, AN apostle (special messenger) of Christ Jesus (the Messiah), by the will of God, and Timothy [our] brother,
2To the saints (the consecrated people of God) and believing and faithful brethren in Christ who are at Colossae: Grace (spiritual favor and blessing) to you and [heart] peace from God our Father.
The Amplified Bible gives us some help to what a saint is, consecrated people of God. To be a saint, to be consecrated is to be set apart. We are to be set apart for the will of God, to serve Him and in doing so to serve others.
How do we go about this, what does it look like in life? I'll turn to another old hymn that gives us some help in answering that question.
Take Time to be Holy
Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord; Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word. Make friends of God's children, help those who are weak, Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek. Take time to be holy, the world rushes on; Spend much time in secret, with Jesus alone. By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be; Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see. Take time to be holy, let Him be thy Guide; And run not before Him, whatever betide. In joy or in sorrow, still follow the Lord, And, looking to Jesus, still trust in His Word. Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul, Each thought and each motive beneath His control. Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love, Thou soon shalt be fitted for service above. |
Spend some time today, speaking with God, feeding on His Word. May we be properly fitted for service.
In Christ,
Mike

Colossians 1 (New Living Translation)
1 This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy.
2 We are writing to God's holy people in the city of Colosse, who are faithful brothers and sisters in Christ.
May God our Father give you grace and peace.
Paul's Thanksgiving and Prayer
3 We always pray for you, and we give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 4 For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all of God's people, 5 which come from your confident hope of what God has reserved for you in heaven. You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News.6 This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God's wonderful grace.
