Verse of the Day 6/15

Isaiah 66:12  For thus says the Lord: Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream; then you will be nursed, you will be carried on her hip and trotted [lovingly bounced up and down] on her [God's maternal] knees.  Amplified Bible (AMP)

I was in Toronto Canada and Buffalo New York this week on business.  I returned to the US through Niagara Falls NY and drove past the great falls.  It was evening and the sun was shining from the west through the mist of the falls creating a full rainbow above the falls.  A few miles above the falls the water looks peaceful but it gains speed and is churning greatly when it reaches and goes over the falls.  It is a magnificent sight.  After the falls and passing under the rainbow bridge, the water smoothes out again to become a peaceful river.

In yesterday's devotional from John Piper, I read the following.  "We are like little geysers that gurgle and sputter and pop erratically.  But God is like a great Niagara - you look at it and think; surely this can't keep going at this force for year after year after year."  But it does and aren't we thankful that it does.

All this reminded me of the Frances Havergal hymn "Like a River Glorious", read or sing the words in your heart or out loud in praise of God's creation, grace and peace.  May we trust Him fully and find Him wholly true

  1. Like a river glorious is God's perfect peace,
    Over all victorious, in its bright increase;
    Perfect, yet it floweth fuller every day,
    Perfect, yet it groweth deeper all the way.
    • Refrain:
      Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blest
      Finding, as He promised, perfect peace and rest.
  2. Hidden in the hollow of His blessed hand,
    Never foe can follow, never traitor stand;
    Not a surge of worry, not a shade of care,
    Not a blast of hurry touch the spirit there.
  3. Every joy or trial falleth from above,
    Traced upon our dial by the Sun of Love;
    We may trust Him fully all for us to do;
    They who trust Him wholly find Him wholly true.
In Christ,
Mike

Isaiah 66:12-13

English Standard Version (ESV)

12 For thus says the Lord:
"Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
    and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
    and bounced upon her knees.

13 As one whom his mother comforts,
    so I will comfort you;
    you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
