Verse of the Day 10/11

Psalm 62:1-2  For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.  English Standard Version (ESV)

C. S. Lewis wrote that "we live, in fact, in a world starved for solitude, silence, and privacy, and theirfore starved for meditation and true friendship."  He wrote these words over 50 years ago when the world, at least to us, seemed to be at a slower pace, withouth i-phones, i-pods, hand held games and the internet.

Today's verses come from Psalm 62 which has the heading "a Psalm of David".  David wrote many of the psalms during and because of times spent alone with God, in solitude, just God and him.  Even Jesus often withdrew himself from the disciples and the crowds to get alone and pray with God the Father.

In today's world with all of the gadgets at our fingertips, many may go through days or longer without taking time to be "alone with their thoughts" let alone, with God in their thoughts.  It is a tragedy.  It is these times, spent with God in His Word and in prayer that can strengthen us, calm us, and prepare us for the day and what we will face amid the clatter, the white noise that surrounds us or perhaps we surround ourselves with.

An old hymn comes to mind "Take Time to Be Holy".  It is not about having a "holier than thou" attitude, but in context it is setting yourself apart for God, which is what we are doing when we take the time in solitude with our creator.

Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;
Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.
Make friends of God's children, help those who are weak,
Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
Spend much time in secret, with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be;
Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

Will you do so?  "Everything I need comes from him, so why not?" (The Message)
Blessings,
Mike

Psalm 62:1-2

The Message (MSG)

A David Psalm

62 1-2 God, the one and only—
    I'll wait as long as he says.
Everything I need comes from him,
    so why not?
He's solid rock under my feet,
    breathing room for my soul,
An impregnable castle:
    I'm set for life.
