Verse of the Day 3/1
New International Version
6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
As the Apostle Paul is bringing the body of his letter to the church at Colossae to a close he gives them some basic instructions for things they should pray for and how they should conduct themselves when they are among others, including outsiders. It is a reminder that we should be the same people and that when we are around outsiders, we should be mindful of our conduct in order that we may "make the best use of time" as examples of being a Christ follower.
You've probably had someone ask of you, "when you have a few minutes, would you mind getting together to talk"? They may be seeking advice on any number of subjects, but we should never take it lightly. It is a good time to say a prayer and ask for the Spirit's leading in the conversation that will follow.
The verses tell us that our words should be full of grace. Our words should be spiritual, wholesome, fit the situation, kind, sensitve to the person; purposeful, loving and thoughtful to name a few. The salt speaks of seasoning, adding a positive influence upon the person just as salt brings out the flavor in food in a positive way.
The verses should also be a reminder to think of Jesus words as he dealt with the disciples and others that would come across his path. His words were words of life. I'm reminded of and will close with an old hymn, "Wonderful Words of Life".
1 Sing them over again to me,
Wonderful words of life;
Let me more of their beauty see,
Wonderful words of life;
Words of life and beauty
Teach me faith and duty.
Refrain:
Beautiful words, wonderful words,
Wonderful words of life;
Beautiful words, wonderful words,
Wonderful words of life.
2 Christ, the blessed one, gives to all
Wonderful words of life;
Sinner, list to the loving call,
Wonderful words of life;
All so freely given,
Wooing us to heaven. [Refrain]
3 Sweetly echo the gospel call,
Wonderful words of life;
Offer pardon and peace to all,
Wonderful words of life;
Jesus, only Savior,
Sanctify forever. [Refrain]
Blessings,
Mike
Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace. NIV
New International Version
4 Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.
Further Instructions
2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
