Verse of the Day 7/26

Verse of the Day 7/26

1 John 5:20
English Standard Version

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

Our Tuesday Men's Bible study reviewed 1 John 5 this morning and it was pointed out that the word "know" is repeated 7 times in this short passage (below). As in the Gospel of John in verse 20:31 where John states the intention of his gospel "that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, and that by believing we may have life in His name", John wants to give his readers confidence, assurance that they can know for certain that Jesus is their Savior.

John Piper writes that "these things are written - the whole Bible is written- that we might believe - that we might be stunned and awakened to the wonder - that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came into the world."  Have you been stunned, have you been awakened to the wonder?

In the passage John writes that we may : know that we have eternal life; we know that He hears us when we pray; we know that we have the requests, the things we've asked of Him; we know that those who are born of God do not keep on sinning; we know that we are from God and the rest of the world lies in the power of the evil one; and we know that the Son of God has come and given us understanding.  Through these things we know that we are in "him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ.  He is the true God and eternal life.  What more assurance do we need?

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine
O what a foretaste of glory divine
Heir of salvation, purchase of God
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood

This is my story, this is my song
Praising my Savior all the day long
This is my story, this is my song
Praising my Savior all the day long

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior am happy and blessed
Watching and waiting, looking above
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love

May you be watching and waiting for His return.

Blessings,
Mike

1 John 5:13-21
English Standard Version

That You May Know

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God[a] will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
