Verse of the Day 10/14

Proverbs 19:20-21

English Standard Version

20 Listen to advice and accept instruction,

    that you may gain wisdom in the future.
21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
    but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

I've made several posts recently regarding discernment.  The topic was brought to mind again as I read today's verses in my daily reading in the Proverbs of Solomon.  Part of discernment, perhaps the beginning of it is listening to good avice and accepting reputable instruction.  We should seek councel with those with experience and a good track record on any matter, but underlying all of this it should come from men and women who share a similar faith.

The older and wiser we become in our own eyes the more likely our plans can devolve into those of man, without seeking God or the counsel of Godly people.  If you want to succeed, we need to realize that it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.  He will accomplish His purposes, and all things will work together for good (Romans 8:28).

Regarding the purposes of God working out for good, Adrian Rogers writes, ""This is not conjecture, this is not happenstance, this is not perhaps, this is not maybe; this is ironclad certainty. 'We know that all things work together for good.'"  If our plans are to succeed, God needs to be at the center of them.
