Verse of the Day 3/17

Verse of the Day 3/17

Matthew 10:29-31
English Standard Version

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  When I think of this day I think "green".  When I think green I think spring.  When I think srping i think of the birds singing and building nests.  When I think of birds building nests I think of sparrows who build them anywhere.  When I think of sparrows I think of these verses.  When I think of these verses I think of the Larnelle Harris song "His Eye is on the Sparrow".

Another aspect of the verse that is easily overlooked is the "fear not" statement. In context Matthew had been writing of persecution and other things. The premise here is that If you are a child of God, He knows you, He loves you, He sees you, and He will take care of you.

David Jeremiah writes, "Throughout Scripture, the people of God are reminded, "Do not be afraid." When they come face-to-face with God and His glory: "Do not be afraid." When Peter walks on water: "Do not be afraid." When loved ones die: "Do not be afraid." When all you have is five loaves and two fish: "Do not be afraid."...This simple phrase is God's comfort and invitation to us. We may not have the confidence, skills, or resources needed for our situation, but God does. Jesus invites us to rest, knowing He is God. His peace is ever-present. He delights in our requests for more of Him. It is not about ignoring feelings of fear, but about focusing on God's love, power and provision. As we do, our faith grows as we see God working in the midst of our circumstances.

  1. "Let not your heart be troubled," His tender word I hear,
    And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
    Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
    His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
    His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
  2. Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
    When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
    I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;
    His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
    His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
  3. Refrain:
    I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free,
    For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

May this be your "refrain" today.

Blessings,
Mike

Matthew 10:26-33
English Standard Version

Have No Fear

26 "So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.[a] 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?[b] And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
