Verse of the Day 10/19

Verse of the Day 10/19

Psalm 42:5-6
New International Version

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

My soul is downcast within me;
    therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
    the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.

Psalm 42 came up today in my daily reading in Psalms.   Written by David, " a man after God's own heart" the psalm offers a view of David's heart.  We all go through ups and downs in life and we are well aware of David's time in the valley as well as his mountain top experiences.  Through it all, God was with him, watching over him, guidning him and comforting him.

In today's verses, David is downcast, down into his soul, yet he stiil seeks God.  He goes to the one that has delivered him in the past and counts on him to see him through again.  From the valley he remembers the mountain top experiences and they give him hope in the current situation.

So it should be with us.  Like the deer that needs water daily, we need God and His Word in our lives, daily from our hearts and God will draw near to us, down into our soul and lift us up.

The following song was one of the earliest ones that I can remember from back in Sunday school.  From Psalm 23 the words reveal the heart of David, hopefully ours as well.

 The Lord is my shepherd;
I'll walk with him always.
He leads me by still waters;
I'll walk with him always.

Always, always,
I'll walk with him always.
Always, always,
I'll walk with him always.

Blessings,
Mike

Psalm 42:1-8
New International Version

BOOK II

Psalms 42–72

Psalm 42[a][b]

For the director of music. A maskil[c] of the Sons of Korah.

As the deer pants for streams of water,
    so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
    When can I go and meet with God?
My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
    "Where is your God?"
These things I remember
    as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
    under the protection of the Mighty One[d]with shouts of joy and praise
    among the festive throng.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

My soul is downcast within me;
    therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
    the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
    in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
    have swept over me.

By day the Lord directs his love,
    at night his song is with me—
    a prayer to the God of my life.
