Verse of the Day 2/1

Verse of the Day 2/1

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 New Living Translation

And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

Today's verses should be fsmiliar to most of us.  They come the passage that is better known as the Shema, which means "listen".In Hebrew it has much deeper meaning than just to hear.  It requires focused attention; to hear to the point that it affects you; to understand  what is being conveyed; to inernalize it and take it to heart; and to respond in action to it. We are to hear, to listen to God's Word in such a way and commit to it wholeheartedly.  This involves much more that taking it in every day.  It should impact every area of our lives including our conversations with our children, grandchildren, parents and friends.

David Jeremiah shares a good way to get the ball rolling if we want to "talk about" God's Word with others along the way:

Let me show you this Bible verse I found today!"

:That simple statement—or one like it—may be the single most effective tool for training our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. It's personal, conversational, Scripture-based, and meaningful. We're to be personally committed to reading God's Word, and as we uncover its great truths, we should share them with our children, at home or on the road, when getting up or going to bed."

What does this do?  It shows the other person(s) that we are reading His Word, that it is on our minds. It should be a non threatening conversation starter and lead to questions such as what does this verse say/mean to you? Have you ever considered this? Do you believe this?

Will you try talking about God's word as you're at home, walking or driving or at dinner?  You may be surprised by the results.

  1. Tell me the story of Jesus,
    Write on my heart every word;
    Tell me the story most precious,
    Sweetest that ever was heard.
    Tell how the angels in chorus,
    Sang as they welcomed His birth,
    "Glory to God in the highest!
    Peace and good tidings to earth."
    • Refrain:
      Tell me the story of Jesus,
      Write on my heart every word;
      Tell me the story most precious,
      Sweetest that ever was heard.
  2. Fasting alone in the desert,
    Tell of the days that are past,
    How for our sins He was tempted,
    Yet was triumphant at last.
    Tell of the years of His labor,
    Tell of the sorrow He bore;
    He was despised and afflicted,
    Homeless, rejected and poor.
  3. Tell of the cross where they nailed Him,
    Writhing in anguish and pain;
    Tell of the grave where they laid Him,
    Tell how He liveth again.
    Love in that story so tender,
    Clearer than ever I see;
    Stay, let me weep while you whisper,
    "Love paid the ransom for me."
  4. For all the saints of His love.                         (Frances J. Crosby)

Blessings,
Mike

Deuteronomy 6:3-9
New Living Translation

Listen closely, Israel, and be careful to obey. Then all will go well with you, and you will have many children in the land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.

"Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.[a] And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
