Verse of the Day 11/2

Through the Bible - Jeremiah , Hebrews 2

Good morning,
One of my favorite songs when I was a teenager was "Drift Away" by Doby Grey, you may remember some of the lines:
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
There have probably been times in most of our lives when we felt that way, especially when going through or facing tough times, we just want to drift away from reality.  The problem is what we turn to that sets us drifting.  It's sad to say that I've lost a few friends from those years that drifted to drugs and alcohol.

For today's verse we'll go to Hebrews chapter 2 to a verse which warns us about drifting away from God, from our faith.

Hebrews 2:1 SINCE ALL this is true, we ought to pay much closer attention than ever to the truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past [them] and slip away.   Amplified Bible
or from the NIV
Heb 2:1  We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. NIV
It doesn't take much for us to drift,  whether we're in a row boat drifting downstream or in this fast paced society in a commercial jetliner overshooting an airport by 150 miles.  All it takes is us to take our focus off of what is important and will guide us, propell us to where we are meant to go. It is also possible that we will find those freedoms that we (think) we love we're soon a prisoner of.

What we were to pay more attention to was shown if Hebrews 1.  Hebrews chapter 1:3 told us that Jesus " is the sole expression of the glory of God [the Light-being, the [c]out-raying or radiance of the divine], and He is the perfect imprint and very image of [God's] nature, upholding and maintaining and guiding and propelling the universe by His mighty word of power."

In the weekend services at our church we sang the song "Into Marvellous Light" written by Charlie Hall.

I once was fatherless, a stranger with no hope
Your kindness wakened me
Wakened me from my sleep
Now Your love, it beckons deeply
A call to come and die
By grace now I will come and take this life, take Your life

Into marvelous light I'm running
Out of darkness, out of shame
Through the cross You are the truth
You are the life, You are the way

Maybe you've been drifting from God, possibly without even realizing it.  It's not too late to turn it around.  May we all pay more attention to the truths that we've heard in God's Word lest our hearts drift, and we fool ourselves into thinking, as our Pastor Bob said at the end of his message yesterday, "that there is something that we want more in life than God."
In Christ,
Mike

Heb 2:1-4
2 It's crucial that we keep a firm grip on what we've heard so that we don't drift off. If the old message delivered by the angels was valid and nobody got away with anything, do you think we can risk neglecting this latest message, this magnificent salvation? First of all, it was delivered in person by the Master, then accurately passed on to us by those who heard it from him. All the while God was validating it with gifts through the Holy Spirit, all sorts of signs and miracles, as he saw fit.
