Verse of the Day 6/13

Verse of the Day 6/13

Revelation 4:11"Worthy are you, our Lord and God,

    to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
    and by your will they existed and were created."    English Standard Version (ESV)

On Sunday we considered Romans 8:28 where we  read that "all things work together for good" for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.  We looked at the other "all things" statements that ended chapter 11 and followed in chapter  8.  They revolved around those who love  God, while those who hate God or are indifferent to Him won't experience that, they won't see His glory and won't sing His praise.

By chance, (do you think?) Sunday morning in our worship service we sang the hymn, "Holy, Holy,  Holy" which  has been one of my favorites since I learned it as a child.  Today's passage (along with Isaiah 6)was the basis for that hymn.  The verse starts with "worthy".  The term comes from Anglo Saxon "weorth-scipe" out of which we get worship, meaning to attribute worth to an object.  Joseph Carroll writes that "Worship is the "worthship" of the one you worship.  To worship Jesus is to attribute worth to Him."

As we sang the hymn a line jumped out at me that I had sung hundreds of times or  more without giving it much thought "though the eye of sinful man thy Glory may not see".  Those who love God and are called see God's glory in what He has done, what He is doing and what He will do.  We praise Him, we worship Him for "all things" that He has created.  Those who don't love Him don't see it, to their detriment.

We can see the glory of God in His creation, we can see it in His love for us, for those of us who are called  and love Him we will see it for eternity and forever be singing His praise.  For me, this old hymn will be one of my favorites for eternity, praising the "age after age living One".  (The Message)

  1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
    Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
    Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
    God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
  2. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
    Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
    Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
    Perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.
  3. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
    All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
    Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
    God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Revelation 4:9-11The Message (MSG)

9-11 Every time the Animals gave glory and honor and thanks to the One Seated on the Throne—the age-after-age Living One—the Twenty-four Elders would fall prostrate before the One Seated on the Throne. They worshiped the age-after-age Living One. They threw their crowns at the foot of the Throne, chanting,

Worthy, O Master! Yes, our God!
Take the glory! the honor! the power!
You created it all;
It was created because you wanted it.
