Verse of the Day 6/4

Verse of the Day 6:4

1 Chronicles 29:11  Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.  English Standard Version (ESV)

Many, including most of us, will be heading off to church today and offer our praise to God, primarily in thanks, with thankful hearts for our good fortune.  Things may be going well in our lives and we want to thank and praise God for our "good fortune".  This isn't a problem if it is a part of our worship, but our worship, at it's core, is for who God is, that He is worthy of our praise and our admiration even if we things aren't going so well or we are in the middle of a dark valley.

A.W. Tozer writes, "The simple truth is that worship is elementary until it begins to take on the quality of admiration. Just as long as the worshiper is engrossed with himself and his good fortune, he is a babe. We begin to grow up when our worship passes from thanksgiving to admiration. As our hearts rise to God in lofty esteem for that which He is ("I AM THAT I AM"), we begin to share a little of the selfless pleasure which is the portion of the blessed in heaven." That Incredible Christian, 127.

In today's passage King David reminds his people to admire and adore their God, praising His name, yes for what He has done, but more for who He is and the majesty and glory of His name.  He looks back through time at God's great work, looks at the present and looks to the future, acknowledging that He is Lord of all, Lord of eternity.

Lord of Eternity
Blessed is the man
Who walks in Your favor
Who loves all Your words
And hides them like treasure
In the darkest place
Of his desperate heart,
They are a light
A strong, sure light.

Lord of Eternity,
Father of mercy,
Look on my fainting soul.
Keeper of all the stars,
Friend of the poorest heart
Touch me and make me whole.

If You are my defender,
Who is against me?
No one can trouble or harm me
If You are my strength .
All I ask, all I desire
Is to live in Your house all my days.   (Lord of Eternity - Fernando Ortega)

Psalm 145:3-4 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,

    and his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall commend your works to another,
    and shall declare your mighty acts.

1 Chronicles 29:10-13The Message (MSG)

10-13 David blessed God in full view of the entire congregation:

Blessed are you, God of Israel, our father
    from of old and forever.
To you, O God, belong the greatness and the might,
    the glory, the victory, the majesty, the splendor;
Yes! Everything in heaven, everything on earth;
    the kingdom all yours! You've raised yourself high over all.
Riches and glory come from you,
    you're ruler over all;
You hold strength and power in the palm of your hand
    to build up and strengthen all.
And here we are, O God, our God, giving thanks to you,
    praising your splendid Name.
