Yesterday we considered what the doorkeeper at the house of God would see. In today's verses we learn something of Jesus from someone who lived in the same house as Jesus as He was growing up. Mary instructs the servants to do what Jesus tells them. They do so, and the water is turned to wine.
It is a time of transition. Jesus is heading out into the world to spread the good news. He has his disciples in tow. They've come to follow him, most likely expecting grandiose things. So where does Jesus first take them? To a wedding. It was a part of everyday life. Jesus reveals his first miracle to them in the course of everyday life. It should be a message for us. Let Jesus lead you step by step in your normal everyday life. Being faithful to him, hanging around with him, you will see great things happen, even miracles if you let him lead the way.
Mary undoubtedly had seen Jesus take responsibility in their home. He had become the "go to person" in solving problems in getting things done. Now she is passing this on to his followers and even us today, to "do whatever He tells you". Where do we find what this is? A good place to start is the book of John. If you haven't been following the read through the Bible plan (below) now may be a good time. Today's reading is from John 3, if you want to catch up it won't take you very long.
We'll close with a few verses from later in the book of John which speak of abiding, the literal meaning here is to "remain, to stay around".
John 15:4,7 English Standard Version (ESV) 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
Blessings,
Mike
