Verse of the Day 7/14
Genesis 24:12 And he said, "O Lord, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham. English Standard Version (ESV)
Yesterday we considered the importance of starting out the day in God's word and in prayer. I read this verse yesterday in a devotional and immediately thought of how well it related to Paul's advice to Timothy. We closed yesterday with "be bold, be strong, for the Lord thy God is with thee". Today's verse goes all the way back to the time of Abraham and he sent his servant off on a mission. His desire was to succeed, to accomplish what his master desired and he knew where to turn for help in accomplishing the task.
When was the last time that you started the day with a similar prayer? We may have one specific thing in mind that won't have long lasting ramifications or it may just seem that way. We never know whether or the answer to that prayer will have ramifications that will impact or lives and the lives of others for generations.
David Jeremiah quoted former Tennessee basketball coach Pat Summit wrote, "There are different kinds of success. There is fame and fortune, which…is a pretty flimsy, short-lived kind of success. Then there is the more gratifying kind of success that comes from doing something you love, and doing it well. Still another kind of success results from committing to one person and raising a child with them. Yet another is finding a sustained faith in your church. But notice something about all the various forms of success. They are open-ended. They aren't tasks that you finish. Success is a project that's always under construction."
John Piper writes, "The world is desperate for a faith that combines two things: awestruck apprehension of unshakable divine Truth, and utterly practical, round-the-clock power to make a liberating difference in life. That is what I want too. Which is why I am a Christian. "
May we offer a similar "open ended" prayer today, realizing that we're under construction, but desiring to accomplish what our Master desires, grounded in His unshakable truth with liberating power make a difference in our life and in our "world".
Blessings,
Mike
Genesis 24:10-14The Message (MSG)
10-14 The servant took ten of his master's camels and, loaded with gifts from his master, traveled to Aram Naharaim and the city of Nahor. Outside the city, he made the camels kneel at a well. It was evening, the time when the women came to draw water. He prayed, "O God, God of my master Abraham, make things go smoothly this day; treat my master Abraham well! As I stand here by the spring while the young women of the town come out to get water, let the girl to whom I say, 'Lower your jug and give me a drink,' and who answers, 'Drink, and let me also water your camels'—let her be the woman you have picked out for your servant Isaac. Then I'll know that you're working graciously behind the scenes for my master."
