Verse of the Day 7/27

Verse of the Day 7/27

2 Timothy 3:16-17

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.  English Standard Version (ESV)

How important is  God's  Word,  the Bible to you?  The  Apostle Paul, in no  uncertain terms points  out the importance and it's usefulness to us.  If we truly want  to learn, want to improve our lives, desire to follow God to live as He would have us live and be "equipped" to face the  day come what  may, it is all  important.  After all, as today's verses point out, it  is "breathed out", inspired by God for His purposes.  That "breathed out" is a reminder of life itself how God breathed into  all  creation the  "breath of life" (Genesis 2:7).

Notice  that the verse says it is useful for teaching us, for  reproof – rebuke for wrong behavior; and  correction.  John  MacArthur  notes  that  this correction is  "the restoration of something to its proper condition",  as  in the "righting  of a  fallen  object, or  helping back to their feet those  who  had stumbled."  Haven't we all needed that correction in our walk?

The teaching portion has to do with study.  David Mathis  writes, "Don't be afraid to pause and pose questions — the simplest kind and the very hardest — and then expect to find answers. And be ready to do what it takes to pursue them. We call this Bible study. And it can be time-consuming, and greatly rewarding. Perhaps the main obstacle that keeps us from doing it well today isn't that we're not smart enough, but that we're too lazy to put in the energy to ask the hard questions, and the time it takes to really pursue the answers."

The thought of "study" brings me back to the previous chapter to 2 Timothy 2:15:

2 Timothy 2:15  21st Century King James Version (KJ21)

15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman who needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Blessings,

2 Timothy 3:16-17The Message (MSG)

14-17 But don't let it faze you. Stick with what you learned and believed, sure of the integrity of your teachers—why, you took in the sacred Scriptures with your mother's milk! There's nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God's way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.
