Verse of the Day 12/7/17

1 John 5:4-5  For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?  English Standard Version (ESV)

For the next couple of days, Lord willing, we'll consider some verses from 1 John 5.  One of the constant themes in the Apostle John's writings, both in the Gospel of John and in his letters here, is love, specifically the love of God.  The most famous verse in the Bible is probably John 3:16 "for God so loved the world".  The act of giving us His Son Jesus is why we will be celebrating Christmas in a few weeks.  In that act of love, God overcame the world.   By putting our faith and trust in Him we too, through His love we are empowered to be overcomers in our world, in our circumstances in the world today.

As you read through John's writings you will see many of the characteristics of this love of God.  It is lasting, in fact everlasting.  It is sacrificial – He sent His Son to die for us so that we might live and be overcomers, even death to eternal life.  His love brings healing and reconciliation.  His love is shared, between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, with us.  It is more than emotion, it is effective, through His Word (Heb. 4:12) and active, empowering us to overcome.  It  is fearless and it casts out fear, think of all of His saints through history that have demonstrated this.  It is discerning, it perceives, knows and changes our hearts.  It is accepting, His will is that all can be saved.  It is generous, it is a free gift to us, we can do nothing to earn it and we don't deserve it, still He glories it and is glorified in His gift of love.

Consider some of these things today.  See His love as you read His Word, as you pray, and as you go about your day.  Instead of being overcome by the world around you, may you be an overcomer and spread His love.

5 1-3 Every person who believes that Jesus is, in fact, the Messiah, is God-begotten. If we love the One who conceives the child, we'll surely love the child who was conceived. The reality test on whether or not we love God's children is this: Do we love God? Do we keep his commands? The proof that we love God comes when we keep his commandments and they are not at all troublesome.
