Verse of the Day 2/11
Hebrews 1:1-2 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. English Standard Version (ESV)
The book of Hebrews is well known for taking a look back through Biblical history and giving applications to it's readers back in the first century and now. Today's verses look back on how God spoke to His people through the Bible. He spoke to the prophets starting with Abraham directly, he spoke to Jacob in a dream and later wrestled with him in another dream; He spoke to Moses through a burning bush; He spoke to Jonah in the belly of a fish; and He spoke to Balaam through a donkey.
We don't have to wait to hear from a burning bush or a talking donkey or horse to hear from God. God sent His son Jesus into the world to live among us. He taught by parables and by His actions that are recorded for us. He has given us His Word in the Bible. He has also given us preachers and teachers to break it down for us with modern day applications.
God is still active in the world and His word and the Holy Spirit are given to guide us. Super Bowl winning coach Tony Dungy writes, "The key to good communication is for the speaker to enunciate well and use words that can be understood; the listener needs to listen and focus on what is being said and not what he or she wants to say. God knows what He is saying and how to say it - we need to be still and listen for His voice. It's always a good idea to start in His Word, the Bible." As a Super Bowl winning coach I don't think that Tony Dungy had much trouble having his players listen to him without giving him their advice as to how the team should be run. How much more should we listen to Jesus, the One who is "upholding all things by the word of His power" (verse 3 below).
Are you waiting for a word from God today? Go to Him in prayer and look for your answers from the Word and from Jesus the living Word who through His Spirit spoke through the Apostles.
1 Thessalonians 5:14-22 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle,[a] encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. Hebrews 1:1-4 New King James Version (NKJV)
God's Supreme Revelation
1 God, who [a]at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the [b]worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had [c]by Himself [d]purged [e]our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
