Verse of the Day 5/14
Matthew 6:34 Therefore don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
After a couple of nights of very good sleep, last night I tossed and turned. I don't know if I'd call it worry, but all kinds of things just kept running through my mind, preventing me from dozing off. One thing is for certain, in these times there are plenty of things that can keep us awake at night whether you call it worry or not.
Today's familiar verse begins with the word "therefore", a word that appears in scripture over 1000 times; depending on what translation you are reading from. You've probably heard it said that whenever you read this word you should back up and read what it is there for. The point of the passage is that worrying won't add length to our lives and that we should realize that God takes care of the birds of the air and the flowers of the field so we should not worry or fret (see Psalm 37) about the day ahead but remember that God will take care of us.
Pastor John Piper writes, "If we want to live in the power of these great practical "therefores," we must be gripped by the ideas — the views of reality — that go before them and stand under them. Ideas have consequences. So, let's bring all our ideas under the authority of God's word."
Read the passage below, culminating in today's verse. May we take to heart that we are not to worry about tomorrow, each day has enough troubles of it's own, but God will take care of us.

Matthew 6:27-34 English Standard Version (ESV)
27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[a] 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34 "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
