Verse of the Day 5/25
Matthew 5:15-16English Standard Version
Matthew 5:15-16
English Standard Version
15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that hey may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Yesterday's post from 2 Corinthians 4 said that as God let light shine out of darkness into our hearts bringing light into them. That was on my mind as I thought about Jesus statement in John "I Am the light of the world." We know that light dispels darkness, that when light shines the darkness goes away. I read today's passage in my devotions this morning and the thoughts about light continued.
A few years ago we put a solar tube in our house. The tube comes down from the roof and into our kitchen bringiing in natural light. The tube gathers what light is available and reflects it down into the kitchen. During the day we really do not need to turn on the light, the light of the sun provides enough light. But even on the darkest night there is a slight glow from the tube allowing you to at least make your way through the kitchen. As I mentioned, the tube gathers what light there is and reflects it.
The question for us is, how much light is coming into us and how much are we reflecting. Today's verses remind us that we are to be a light to others and as christians like a city on a hill, reflecting showing that light that has come into our lives and is shining through us. Let it shine.
You're the God of this city
You're the king of these people
You're the lord of this nation
You are
[Verse 2]
You're the light in this darkness
You're the hope to the hopeless
You're the peace to the restless
You are
There is no one like our God
There is no one like our God
[Chorus]
For greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city
Greater things have yet to come
And greater things are still to be done in this city. (God of This City - Chris Tomlin)

Salt and Light
13 "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[a]
they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
