Verse of the Day 12/4

2 Peter 1:5-7

5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

Some days it seems that it is hard to find a verse for the day and then on others there are several that come to mind.  Today was one of those days but I chose ones that came from the read through the New Testament plan that I follow.  This years has been a challenging one especially for my wife Jean's battle with cancer.  It has been a year of perseverence for her and we can foresee that that coming one will be as well.  But we are to take courage as verse 3 in the passage below states that "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness".

This does not mean that we sit back and are passive as to what we will face.  Today's verses tells us that we must make every effort, in other words persevere, keep a goin', and "supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self control, self control with steadfastness, steadfastness with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection and brotherly affection with love." Wow!  Quite a challenge.

But again, it is not all on us.  The power and grace come from Christ by the Holy Spirit but aslo through that same power working through others that are putting it into practice in support of us, lifting us up so that we in turn can hope to lift others up, all of us standing on the promises of God.

Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,

List'ning every moment to the Spirit's call.
Resting in my Savior as my All in all,
  Standing on the promises of God.
