Verse of the Day 1/4
Psalm 46:10-11New International Version
Psalm 46:10-11
New International Version
10 He says, "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,I will be exalted in the earth."
11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Our family recently watched the Christmas movie "The Best Christmas Pagent Ever". At one point the little girl portraying the angel making the announcement of Jeus birth yells out "Hey, unto us a child is born". It wasn't expected but it was fitting. All too often we see something written and it is taken as a "soft" statement when perhaps the words were written more authoritatively.
Today's verses came up in my daily reading in the Psalms and they are an example of this. The words "be still" have been put into songs gently singing, "be still, and know that I am God.
With all of the celebration, commotion and time spent with friends and family over the Christmas and New Years holidays it feels good to now be able to catch our breath, rest, and recuperate. But many will be barrelling full speed ahead into the new year at full volume. It is for those that these verses can be directed at. I remember R.C. Sproul's comments on verse 10 where he stated that God was literally saying "shut up", stop all the clamor and know that I am God.
Whether taken as a shout to us, regular voice or a gentle whisper, we still need to heed the words of the verses and be thankful that the Lord Almighty is with us and is our fortress in times of trouble.
Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is holy
Be still, oh restless heart of mine
Bow before the Prince of Peace
Let the noise and clamor cease
[Verse 2]
Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is faithful
Consider all that He has done
Stand in awe and be amazed
And know that He will never change
Be still
[Chorus]
Be still, and know that He is God
Be still, and know that He is God (know that He is God)
Be still (be still) and know that He is God
Be still (be speechless). (Be Still and Know That He is God - Steven Curtis Chapman)

Mike
